Sitting in the shade under the tree

Looking at the waves as they rise and fall

The sea roars like an angry breeze

As I wait in vain for life to call.

Sucking the juice from a ripe yellow mango

My cheeks all sticky as it stains my skin

Yet still I hunger and thirst for more

As I wait in vain for life to begin.

Dancing in the street as calypso plays

And alcohol corrupts my very soul,

To the driving bass my body sways

As I wait for life to take control.

The sun beats down on my bronze face

As the child and the man engage in battle

For the right to rule this aging embryo

As the water boils in this dormant kettle.

So I sit on a raft made of wood

As it floats above this crystal pond

The fish gaze up to see a man

Who’s waiting in vain for life to come.

Through the cane fields of life I now roam

I guess I’m living ’cause I’m alive

Life beckons me forth through this muddle

To taste the sugar and not just survive.
